While many proudly call dogs a part of their families, millions of canines roam the world alone. According to the latest estimates from the World Health Organization, there are over 200 million stray dogs worldwide.
Unfortunately, most of them spend their entire lives without knowing the warmth, comfort and protection of a loving family.
Despite the prevalence of long-forgotten strays, we sometimes hear heartwarming stories about dogs undergoing extreme transformation. Most people turn their cheek at struggling strays, but some kind hearts go above and beyond to show these innocent creatures what love truly is.
In this instance, a woman with a pack of happy and healthy pet dogs encounters a stray. Initially, the lonely and scared dog reacts negatively to her presence, but the woman's vigilance gives the pup a new chance at life.
A Worrying Discovery
While walking her two dogs, the woman discovers a small, fearful pup hiding beneath a car.
The dog is no bigger than her two groomed and spoiled canine companions, but its unkempt appearance indicates its life of struggles. The long-haired dog has a coat full of mats and tangles, and the fur is so overgrown it masks the poor pup's eyes.
The dog shows an obvious apprehension of humans, hiding beneath the car without making a peep. It cowers in fear. Seeing the pup's poor condition, the woman brings food from home.
The dog hesitates but eventually emerges from beneath the car for much-needed sustenance. After scarfing down the food, it retreats to hide once more.
Opening Up
To the woman's surprise, the dog showed up outside her home the next day! The dog cautiously gets close as if pleading for more food and love. She grants his wishes, bringing him a fresh meal.
As he eats, the woman speaks to her neighbor, surprised by how the poor dog found her. The neighbor mentions that they've seen the stray before. However, it's developed a reputation for biting any human approaching it. As a result, most people in the area dare not help it.
After finishing its meal, the dog slowly meanders away. The woman calls out to it, pleading it to stay. The stray dog gives pause but ultimately retreats again.
Several days pass, and the dog continues to return for food. Gradually, the stray begins to open up. The dog becomes less fearful of humans, especially its new guardian angel.
The woman places a cardboard box nearby, coaxing it to enter. During those interactions, the dog lashes out and attempts to bite her. She decides he needs more time.
The Rescue
The dog continues to return daily. Eventually, the woman realizes it's time to rescue this poor pup. After catching the dog off guard, she locks him into a crate. The dog cries out in fear, barking and biting. She calms him down and searches for a shop that can groom him.
Unfortunately, her search was unsuccessful. Most grooming shops won't provide service due to the dog's condition, so she allowed it to rest in the crate for a day.
After a failed attempt at another shop, the woman takes the dog to an animal hospital with experience treating strays. There, the team patiently treats the scared pup.
The dog barks, jumps, and tries to flee throughout its examination and cleaning. However, it calms down once it sees the woman watching nearby. The professionals diligently remove years of matted hair, unveiling a freshly shaven and clean dog.
After a health inspection, tests and vaccines, the woman learns that the dog suffers from malnutrition and moderate skin conditions. But after the experience, the dog is reborn!
A Canine Transformation
After the ordeal, the dog's entire personality changes. It seems to understand that the woman is its savior. The once frightful dog is now social. It sweetly approaches the woman and other humans, yearning for pets and affection.
The dog becomes lively, playful and surprisingly docile—a far cry from its former fearful self.
