Typically, abandoned or stray dogs are wary of human interaction. It comes with the territory of living without the protection of an owner. Many will lash out when humans attempt to provide care, creating challenges for rescuers.

However, every once in a while, a dog is brave enough to seek help when they need it!

The Request for Help

Rescuers received a call from a local fisherman about a stray dog wandering by the river. When they arrived at the scene, they spotted a shaggy-haired dog. They ran towards it, expecting a chase. But the dog stood still and attempted to get closer. But it was unable to do so due to an injury.

The dog suffered from an injured front paw. The rescuers suspected it might be broken. Upon getting closer, they realized the dog had a leash around its neck. The dog was filthy, its fur matted with dirt and vegetation.

Typically, rescuers expect dogs to fight back. However, that wasn't the case with this pup. It sat down, immediately accepted pets and did not attempt to bite or bark.

It showed trepidation when the rescuers tried to bathe it in the river, but it wasn't aggressive. One rescuer decided to take the dog home rather than bathing it there.

The Calm and Thankful Canine Patient

After arriving at a place of shelter, the initial diagnosis for the dog's injury was a comminuted fracture. The rescuer realized the dog couldn't lay down due to an abundance of spiky burs in its fur. After shaving, the dog was finally able to relax.

It was surprisingly calm and docile. It hobbled around its one good front paw while carefully caring for the injured one. The rescuer named the dog Spike and scheduled surgery for his broken leg.

The surgeon worked hard to repair his broken leg, using steel nails and plates to bring the fragments of bone together and facilitate healing. It was a successful surgery, but Spike had a long road of recovery ahead.

Despite the pain and swelling, Spike never showed fear or aggression. The rescuer cared for the dog for several months, watching his hair grow back. After four months, the surgeon removed the steel plates and nails. His bones had healed, and he was able to move on!

Spike made a fantastic recovery, regaining his ability to walk and run. It wasn't long after he healed that rescuers were able to find someone to adopt Spike. He brought his peace and joy to a new family.

Spike was finally safe, finding solace in a new home with a loving owner. He was never too shy to show affection, which didn't change after adoption!

The dog always smiles and hugs his family with his front paws. Suppose it wasn't for his fearlessness in asking for help; who knows where Spike would be? It goes to show that kindness and openness can be a lifesaver!
